‘FG will feed 5 million more students’ -Minister

The federal government is expanding its National Home School Feeding Program (NHGSFP) with an additional 5 million students to the 9 million it currently feeds.

Sadiya Farouk, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, revealed this when she led a team during a courtesy visit to Ahmed Matane, secretary of the Niger state government in Minna on Friday.

Ms Farouk, who was represented by Hezekiah Sunday, deputy director at the ministry, said the team was able to identify beneficiaries and scale up the school feeding program.

She said more than 9 million students are currently receiving a free nutritious meal across the country and the ministry has been tasked with reaching an additional 5 million students by 2023.

She noted that the school feeding program had employed more than 100,000 cooks and that more than 100,000 small farmers were participating in the value chain.

In response, Mr. Matane assured that the state government would continue to provide the support necessary for the success of the program.

He commended the ministry for its continued partnership and support to the state through the provision of relief materials to internally displaced people and flood victims.

Me Matane called on the ministry to extend the school feeding program to elementary four to six students in order to motivate children to come to school and stay there.

“Feeding some students and leaving others out can create demotivation and problems among students, let the curriculum be redesigned so that every elementary student is a part of it,” he said.

In addition, Amina Gu’ar, focal person for the NHGSFP, revealed that approximately 2,087 schools in the state are currently participating in school feeding out of 3,038 schools.

She said the team should assess the program and see how to solve the problem of schools not included in the program.
