Chelsea’s title hopes have taken on new heights with the concession of a late equalizer against Brighton on Wednesday night, and it looks like they will have to win the next two games against Liverpool and Manchester City if they are to hope to reclaim the title they ‘they last won in 2017.

Liverpool’s title hopes took a similar blow with the loss to Leicester on Tuesday, making this game feel like a title eliminator. Whoever loses this one will effectively be out of the title race, while a draw will give City their fourth title in five years.

With both teams battling for form recently, a draw seems to be the most likely outcome. Liverpool have taken 10 points in their last five games but have failed to win their last two and have not been convincing in the three previous wins against Wolves, Aston Villa and Newcastle.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have only won two of their last six games and haven’t looked convincing in any of them. Both sides have struggled with absentees and Covid injuries and simply cannot compete with the embarrassment of City’s wealth. They could give a new initiative to the champions on Sunday.

Chelsea looked impregnable at the start of the Premier League season when they conceded just four goals in their first 12 games, but those days are long gone. The Blues have now conceded 10 in their last eight games in the league, keeping just one clean sheet in that eight-game stretch.

They haven’t kept a clean sheet at home in the league since the end of October and have little hope of doing so against a Liverpool side who have scored 50 goals in 19 games.

Liverpool, on the other hand, haven’t kept white in their last three league games and don’t look as determined as before, even with Virgil Van Dijk returning from a lengthy injury.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have conceded 16 goals in their first 19 games, including three against Brentford and West Ham in unusually porous away performances. The August meeting between the two teams ended in a draw and it would not be surprising to see this game play out in the same way.

Due to a number of extenuating circumstances, Romelu Lukaku has not had the impact expected from a £ 100million striker since returning to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Injuries have hampered his return, leading him to have made just 12 league appearances since his long-awaited return to west London. He has only scored five league goals for Thomas Tuchel’s side and, far from being the missing piece of Chelsea’s near-completed puzzle, Lukaku’s arrival actually coincided with a dramatic drop in form.

However, he has scored two goals in two games over the holiday season and he seems to have finally regained his scoring touch.

The Belgian has come under fair criticism for not playing in big games throughout his career and now is the time to prove himself against a seemingly fragile Liverpool defense.

Mo Salah has now failed to score or assist in his last two Premier League games, managing him only once in his first 17. The Egyptian winger has been Liverpool’s best player by far this season and his failure to impact their last two games. saw them take just one point out of six and hand the initiative back to City.

Salah, however, is both the league’s top scorer and best assistant at the halfway point, fielding his Liverpool team-mates nine times. He appears to have lost his scoring touch in recent weeks, scoring just twice in his last five games, but he is still Liverpool’s most creative and threatening player yet. He averages over two key assists per game and is Liverpool’s best chance to break through an out of the ordinary Chelsea defense.
