PITTSBURGH – Pennsylvania’s unemployment system is finally back up and running tonight after experiencing technical issues since early yesterday morning.
As of Sunday, people trying to claim benefits on the new unemployment benefit website have not been able to log in. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor has been silent on the issues for more than 24 hours, only posting on its social media that they are closed today to celebrate Independence Day.
Erik Hackett is a laid-off steelworker who struggles to support his family while he waits to be called back to work.
“I think this system is worse than the old system,” Hackett explained. “You use the money you have to pay your bills, and that’s just to survive.”
He says he owes six weeks of unemployment backlog – over 5,000. Sunday, like so many others, Hackett couldn’t log on.
Hackett says problems persist with the old and new systems. He contacted 11 investigators out of frustration.
We’ve been emailing the Pennsylvania Department of Labor all day about issues with the new system.
Finally, around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, they sent Channel 11 an email stating that the current technical issues are resolved and users should be able to log in, but they gave no response to past issues. We asked for an interview to answer it. We will keep you posted as soon as we get back to you.
The new system went live almost a month ago. Unfortunately, users are still facing major issues.
Finally, around noon on Monday, a notice was posted on UC’s website and social media accounts telling users that the system was experiencing technical difficulties and that they should try again later.
